Prof. Wang Silei Won the Fifteenth Hua Loo-Keng Prize of Mathematics
On October 23, 2021, the Chinese Mathematical Society 2021 Annual Conference was held in Kunming, Yunnan province. The 88-year-old Prof. Wang Silei from School of Mathematical Sciences, Zhejiang University was presented the Fifteenth Hua Loo-Keng Prize of Mathematics, a lifetime achievement award for Chinese mathematicians. He is the first winner of this award from Zhejiang province. Congratulations!
Professor Wang Silei, born in 1933, graduated from Zhejiang University in 1953. He chose to stay in the Department of Mathematics as an assistant teacher upon graduation and has been working here ever since. All these years, he served as lecturer, associate professor, professor, dean of the Department of Mathematics, and chairman of the Zhejiang Mathematical Society, etc., making valuable contributions to the advancement of mathematical sciences in Zhejiang Province and the development of harmonic analysis in China.
Wang Silei did not retire in 2003, but continued teaching out of enthusiasm, one course for undergraduate and one for graduate students each semester. He had been serving as a doctoral supervisor until the age of 78 when he decided to “retire”. Even so, he maintained the habit of attending academic conferences 2 to 3 times a year.
The “Hua Loo-Keng Prize of Mathematics”, awarded every two years, is set up together by the Chinese Mathematical Society and Hunan Education Publishing House in memory of the famous Chinese mathematician Professor Loo-Keng HUA. The Chinese Mathematical Society is responsible for deciding and awarding winners. The award is for those Chinese mathematicians who have made outstanding contribution in the field of mathematics. The Hua Loo-Keng Prize of Mathematics since its establishment has been held for fifteen consecutive sessions, at most two Chinese mathematicians are awarded in each session.
